Chris Cornell: Carry On
Chris Cornell has made quite a noteworthy career in rock with groups such as Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog, yet he still manages to surprise the listeners on his latest solo effort "Carry On". While I was expecting to hear a lot of tracks in the vein of Audioslave, it turned out this album relies on mellow material for the most part. Carry On is rather mature release in terms of music, which ranges from soulful blues to pop, rock and even country. The highlight of this album is quite easily the main title song for the current James Bond release, Casino Royale, titled as "You Know My Name". That track along with "No Such Thing", "Poison Eye" and "Your Soul Today" present the harder edge of this record. For some this may be a real letdown, but if one open's one's mind the rest of the material does have its moments too... for example, Cornell's bluesy rendition of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean is fairly good, although not great. On the negative side, the material on this album gets a bit repetitive in the longer run, and the amount of forgettable songs outweigh that of catchy ones. In my view, this is a record that will divide opinions strongly - some will probably love it, while others hate it. Regardless, I recommend you to give it a brief listen at the nearest record store to see for yourself.
